I set my sandals neatly

near the steps enter

a temple no Siloam

descend to an underworld

But I don’t go under

I keep face up

becoming no more than

head & shoulder

like my father

(long gone now)

who went so far

out we children thought

it was another order

always he needed space

and the ocean had more

than you looked for

touching shores

we scarcely credited

that he called

rest of the world

he said we must not follow

there was rip tide

and dark fin

he was beyond them

we called & called him

he stayed out longest

all on his own

Do as I say & not as I do

He told us

never to swim

in an empty place

it was a bad sign

Here in the small pond

indoor and heated

the sign says

you must go clockwise

like draining away

but nobody else is in

so I move at cross

purposes a particle

erratic & loop like

that second hand

on the wall sweeping

insanely above the pool

where nobody cares

for personal best

there’s none to witness

shame or success
